In July 2009 work began on a SRDC funded project to improve the transportation bulk density of whole crop harvested sugar cane. The project titled ‘NSC019 - Improving the harvesting and transportation of biomass for sugar and power production in NSW’ is evaluating and testing strategies to increase whole crop bulk density.
Whole crop harvested sugar cane has a significantly lower transportation bulk density then burnt or green extracted cane. The project aims to identify, test and evaluate appropriate engineering solutions to the bulk density problem and in doing so, reduce the cost of whole crop harvesting.
